Bob Nolan was born on April 1, 1908, in New Brunswick, Canada, attended schools in Boston and moved to Tucson to join his father when he was 14. In 1927 he began roaming the length and breadth of the country and finally joined his father in California in 1929. By this time, Nolan had started singing in various concerts and had turned his thoughts to a career in music. In 1933 he answered an ad in a Los Angeles newspaper to try out as a member of a Western singing group which was later to become known as the Sons of the Pioneers. Bob Nolan wrote over 1,500 songs including “Cool Water” and “Tumbling Tumbleweeds,” which became the theme songs of the Sons of the Pioneers. “Cool Water” has been inducted into the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame. Nolan passed away on June 16, 1980. At his request, his ashes were scattered across the Nevada desert.
