Frank Sanucci

Frank Sanucci

Frank Sanucci was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1901, but came to the US as a young man and eventually found work as a musical director in Hollywood. Concentrated largely in B-Westerns for Monogram & Grand National Studios, Sanucci’s work became especially recognizable in the films of Tex Ritter, Hoot Gibson, Ken Maynard, Bob Steele, The Three Mesquiteers, Wild Bill Elliott, Johnny Mack Brown, Buster Crabbe (& Al “Fuzzy” St. John) and later, Jimmy Wakely.

As is evident from this list, which includes a number of early stars who did not sing, Sanucci’s compositions were usually the soundtrack music that contributed to the ambience of a film. His work in films directed by Lambert Hillyer and Oliver Drake, two of Hollywood’s most prolific B-Western directors, was especially notable. And, over the years, he composed music for over 90 movies!

He also produced some of Tex Ritter’s early recordings for Decca, building upon their performance in Tex’s Grand National films in the late 1930s. Today, his work for Grand National, in particular, can be enjoyed in the Ritter films available on YouTube, and in Tex’s studio recordings from the late 1930s, re-issued on the Bear Family record label
