9:45-11:45am - The Birth & History of Western Swing hosted by Mike Markwardt
This film chronicles the quintessential story of America’s most joyous music. Western Swing got its start “Where the West Begins” in a ramshackle dancehall in Fort Worth, Texas during the depths of the Dust Bowl and Great Depression. It evolved with a spongelike ability to absorb a myriad of ethnic and cultural styles from Black, White, Brown, Rural and Urban influences to create an intoxicating musical gumbo. This groundbreaking documentary traces its origins, development and legacy utilizing original and contemporary voices from a cast of legendary stars and respected historians.

10:00-11:00am
The Roots of Western Music – A Panel Discussion - Jim Jones, Allan Chapman, Patty Clayton
To figure out where you’re headed, it sometimes helps to look back at the past. We’ll delve into some high points in the history of Western Music and speculate on where that might lead us going forward. We’ll touch on the earliest cowboy songs gathered by Jack Tharp and John Lomax, explore music from the Silver Screen Cowboys period and sample some songs from the early days of the WMA (before the “I”). From there, we’ll look ahead to what the future might hold for Western Music.

Open Range Cowboy Music & Poetry – Steve Cormier
Traditional cowboy music came from the work of ranch hands on the open range and early fenced ranch years. The period is from post-civil war to roughly the l920s. Working cowboys, mostly anonymous, composed poetry and songs about horses, cattle, love, hate, longing, success, and failure, religion, and death. The music was an expression of their lives and is the foundation of modern western music. We will cover the development of this music from the trail songs of the l870s to the l920s “Tyin’ Knots in the Devil's Tail” and “Little Joe the Wrangler.
